Cloves are the aromatic flower buds of a tree in the family Myrtaceae, Syzygium aromaticum. They are native to the Maluku Islands (or Moluccas) in Indonesia. Grown on red soil of Midland Kerala this unopened flower bud is a beloved flavouring agent. Cloves are known as Flower of Heaven and have strong aroma and pungent taste. It is used to enhance the flavour in meat dishes as well as desserts.

Cloves are a rich source for manganese, an essential mineral for maintaining brain function and strong bones. They are also high in eugenol, a natural antioxidant, shown to have anti cancer properties. It is a popular anesthetic for toothaches.
